Mission Statement

The Good News, Neighbor! is a local news blog that tells the stories you care about.

No paywalls, ever. Ever been prevented from reading local news via a paywall? Ever paid a subscription and still couldn’t access your content? We are committed to ensuring that our content is accessible to all of our neighbors. We will never gate content behind a paywall.

No site bloat. We have all seen sites and blogs filled with irrelevant content and clickbait ads. These things are a consequence of the modern business model, driven by aggressively optimized revenue models. The site regards these things as entirely optional. And, we opt out. We don’t believe that readers have to be visually assaulted to support our platform.

Fighting the bots. Did you know up to 60% of web traffic can be attributed not to humans, but to bots? Some bots can be helpful (like search engine crawlers), but others spread misinformation and manipulate engagement models. We have all seen it, and some of us by now know what to look for. People arguing with bots, bots arguing with bots! Though not even the big guys can eliminate bots, we commit to doing what we make sure comments are coming from your neighbors.

Accessible advertising. Local businesses are on the front lines of what it means to be a community. We want to do what little we can to help real people. Our advertising options are focused on accessibility to small businesses and relevancy to our readers.

Serves the community. We join a proud movement of independent, non-traditional journalism and will remain so. We are supported primarily by volunteer time and reader donations, not by political or corporate interests. The Good News, Neighbor! is a passion project, and serving the community is our aim and our great joy.

Enjoy what we do? See how to support the blog.
